In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, McAfee Knob is a 3,197-foot (976 m) tall peak with dramatic views of the Roanoke Valley. The knob is located on the Appalachian Trail and is a popular destination for day hikers and backpackers since the early 20th century. The knob was named for George McAfee, a 19th-century settler who was the first to build a cabin on the summit. The trail to the top of McAfee Knob is considered to be one of the most scenic and challenging hikes in the region.
