History
The area was first settled by Native Americans who hunted and fished in the area. In the early 1600s, the area was explored by English settlers. In 1634, the first permanent settlement was established at Cape Henry. The settlers named the area Sandbridge because of the sand dunes that lined the shore. The area remained mostly rural until the late 1800s when it began to be developed as a beach resort.
The first hotel was built in 1893 and the area soon became a popular summer destination for wealthy families from Richmond and Norfolk. The Sandbridge Beach area continued to grow and develop throughout the 20th century. Today, it is a popular year-round destination for both locals and visitors.
